The Rules Blog tour by Stacey Kade [book review]

Hi guys! Thanks for dropping by the blog today.

I have with me my review of The Rules by Stacey Kade. Her very first syfy/scifi book series! I absolutely loved the Ghost and the Goth series...and having the opportunity to join the ARC tour Pinoy Book Tours organized is such a joy! I’d like to thank Louisse from The Soul Sisters blog for lending us her ARC of The Rules. :)

The Rules (Project Paper Doll #1) by Stacey Kade

1. Never trust anyone.
2. Remember they are always searching.
3. Don’t get involved.
4. Keep your head down.
5. Don’t fall in love.
Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”
But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

I remember reading the Rules' synopsis for the first time from Stacey Kade's blog/site, and couldn't believe the author was delving into scifi now. I absolutely liked the synopsis and was very interested in the book. And so, as many of those read and loved synopsis, the usual "staying behind the back of my brain" standby mode was turned on. It wasn't until I signed up for a Philippines only ARC tour did I decide to finally read the book. And boy do I not regret it. One of the right choices i made.

First off, the Rules is not what I expected it to be. It certainly shocked the air out of me for lots of moments. Many tearjerker situations too! Ariane Tucker is a human-alien hybrid, who may or may not be the only one existing. For the first 6 years of her life she stayed inside a white four walled laboratory room, where she's always observed, prodded and experimented on. But one miracle, one night, an escape happened and now she's hiding...in plain sight. Bound by her adopted father's rules to stay anonymous, she lives a boring, arduous life. Until her junior year.

For some reason the scifi novel is so emotional for me. Trying to see and feel from Ariane's perspective and place, I know it's a very difficult and depressing life to live. Plus, as the days go by, her experiences go and confuse and consume her.. And then a bomb of truth hits her where she's not expecting it. Mix it with the usual high school bullies drama. Well, the equivalent is just not good and pleasant to see and read.

And yet again, I can see no flaws in Stacey's writing. It was showering with new vocab words at the same time very easy to understand.

Overall, I enjoyed this semi-scifi novel and I can't wait for more action..less drama pls!
