Hi guys! Today, we have a tourvstop for Jessica Shirvington's Emblaze blog tour. Emblaze is the third book in the Embrace series, and this particular version is published by Sourcebooks Fire, and they also hosted this tour.
Fun fact! The series fame has led to its adaptation into a television series with the CW Network, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and CBS Television Studios! Now, that is thrilling!
Anyway, I'm sharing with you guys an awesome interview I had with the author, plu plus, Sourcebooks is generously giving away a copy of the book (to US/Can residents only though). So don't forget to enter! :)
Coffee, Books and Me interviews author Jessica Shirvington
Hi Jessica! Thanks for dropping by Coffee, books and me. So honored to have a very talented author with us.
Hi Jenna, Thanks so much for having me as a guest!
Aww, you're welcome! it's a pleasure to have you over ;)
Speaking of being a talented author that you are, we know that there are a lot of angel-themed books out there, how do you distinguish your own kinds of angels in your novels, the Embrace series from the others?
I don't really give a lot of thought to other angel books and I actually go out of my way to avoid reading them - especially when I am drafting. I think if I was reading them all I would go insane. When I started writing EMBRACE it was 2009. There were not many other angel books out in YA at that time. The focus was strongly with Vampires and Werewolves. I approached the theme wanting to take a fresh angle. Of course, like it often does, these thing tend to work in waves. By the time the books started coming out in the US, there was a collection of angel books starting to make the rounds. All I can do as an author is be fully invested in my characters and the story arch that I come up with. I'm a very emotional writer so I think that comes through strongly in my characters.
While still writing the books, have you always imagined seeing your characters play in the sceen? I am so ecstatic about this news by the way. :)
I have a very clear image of each of my characters in my imagination. So in that sense it is hard to imagine actors playing the parts. But in another way, as a writer, I am very visual and I write as I see the scene playing out as if I were watching them. From that point of view it is very easy for me to imagine the story on screen.
I know you're pretty busy balancing your daily activities of working and taking care of the kids with writing, the million dollar question is: what is your secret in being able to balance everything so well? (How do you manage to still find time to write?)
By not always doing it that well probably ;-) I'm not perfect and I let things slide in areas at times. I find I have to work constantly as finding the right balance and there never seems to be enough hours in the day. But I love my family, I love my work and so... There is no other way for me. I'm also extremely lucky. I have the world's most gorgeous husband and he does a lot to help out with the kids!
Have any of your girls read your books?
Not yet. My daughters are 4 and 6, so they have a few years to go yet. It is a hard decision actually, to decide when it will be ok. All I know is that between now and then there are so many books I want them to experience. We are reading Alice in Wonderland and Chronicles of Narnia at the moment. And I'm looking forward to starting the Harry Potter books in the next year with my eldest.
Can we expect more Violet-Lincoln and Violet-Phoenix scenes in Emblaze?
There are most definitely scenes with Violet and Lincoln, and Violet and Phoenix. Interestingly, there is also a chapter in Phoenix's point of view and it has ended up being one of my favorite chapters in the book, so I really hope everyone else enjoys the insight into his very complex mind, too.
Any future projects in tow?
ENDLESS, book 4, will be out in October in the US. I also have my first stand alone novel on the way called, BETWEEN THE LIVES. It is more of a psychological thriller and I am extremely excited about it. And then, I'm also working on the fifth and final book in the Embrace Series.
That's very exciting! Thanks you Jessica for answering our questions! :)
