A girl who believes trust can be misplaced, promises are made to be broken, and loyalty is an illusion. A boy who believes truth is relative, lies can mask unbearable pain, and guilt is eternal. Will what they find in each other validate their conclusions, or disprove them all?
When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup two months into sophomore year. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she's single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, and failing a class for the first time in her life.
Leaving a party alone, Jacqueline is assaulted by her ex's frat brother. Rescued by a stranger who seems to be in the right place at the right time, she wants nothing more than to forget the attack and that night--but her savior, Lucas, sits on the back row of her econ class, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. Her friends nominate him to be the perfect rebound.
When her attacker turns stalker, Jacqueline has a choice: crumple in defeat or learn to fight back. Lucas remains protective, but he's hiding secrets of his own. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.
My Thoughts:
Now I get what the hype is all about. :)
I've been wanting to read this book ever since early is year. And now the year is near it's end, it's just right I have to read it. And I did! Yey for me!
Anyway, the novel is not what I expected it to be. In a good way. I expected the book to be heavy in the sexual content, which I'm still a bit uncomfortable with, but it's actually not! Other than the few make-out scenes, it's pretty subtle. Compared to other new adult/mature YA novels. Then, I expected some serious social issue or just a disturbing issue behind Lucas' (the guy) past, but it's actually not a dirty issue, but instead it's pretty heartbreaking and depressing. I wasn't really expecting where the story went but I liked it still, and more.
Jacqueline is one tough chick. I admired her trustworthiness, for instance when she followed her ex to the university he chose instead of applying to her dream school..because their relationship was serious. But when he broke up with her (for some dumb foolish and selfish reason), he shattered her world. Not to the point of suicide though, just not attending the Economics class they both attend, for two weeks. Then after a halloween party, the almost-rape happened, and this is where Lucas enters the picture. From then on, let's just say, it's the start of something new. ;) I'm gonna admit, their mini or semi run-chase thing was spine-tingling and heart-jumping. Lucas is not at all your typical bad boy, and I don't even see him as one, because he's not. His various jobs and work and study ethics will shock and amaze you, I was amazed by him. Jacqueline and Lucas' interactions are simple but riveting. There were no mentally-depressing/breaking down issues in the story. But, it's just what it is, and I think that's what made it awesome.
I don't even have to tell you twice guys to read the book, just do. It's a fast read btw:)
Glad you enjoyed! Great points about Lucas!
