My rating: 4 of 5 stars

First of five books. The Key of Credence tells us about Ryan and her friends and how their simple curiosity brought forth a multitude of problems to them. This book lets the readers experience an entirely new and different world—one that involves the Heavens and the Helles, and most of all—it shows how the humans themselves and how the innate goodness of their souls can create a huge difference on just about everything.

Judging from the cover, you won’t expect a serious touch of story in the novel, well I didn’t. The story kinda remind me of the Percy Jackson series. First, they are of the same age, and at such a young age such a huge responsibility have been given. Then, you’ll meet lots of creatures I haven’t encountered from all of my paranormal genre readings before.

The story. It was A-okay. It started fine but towards the middle the story & pace picked up, much to my excitement. I liked how the main protagonist, Ryan, changed her attitude 180 degrees. From being an insensitive and girl who won’t listen to her friends, she improved her attitude after experiencing something out of the ordinary. The adventure she had was truly life-changing. I was kinda hoping her friends were with her in the adventure she took on, but I guess this was something she had to do alone first. I’m really reminded of the Pretty Little Liars group at the start of the story. They were all part of doing something big and they decided to keep it a secret. It was funny. Anyway, I loved it when an interesting character entered the story: Lou. I was practically shouting “yes! finally! someone interesting & worth lulling over!”. Kinda dense of me, but yes! I believe every story must have someone handsome lest I won’t continue reading it! haha. But I kinda saw Puck of the Iron Fae series on Lou. They are both quirky but both turn serious when the situation calls for it. However, I was just disappointed with the lack of fighting scenes, especially on the part of Ryan. Even if she’s still a novice in those kinds of things, she should have more life & death experiences, hehe. I love it when the main character struggles a lot. Hey, they burn brighter and become epic afterwards, so it’ll be good.

I have to admit, I had a really difficult time following many MANY I mean MANY new terms and the names! oh the names of the creatures are so difficult to remember at the beginning. Ikohorts and such. I kinda preferred with the Button people, easier to remember. But, as I moved on to the story, I picked on their names easily, but I’m still not a fan of the weird creatures. Gives me the creeps.

I also have to say, the vocabulary and adjectives used in the book was excellent. I love it when I read uncommon words. However, SOMETIMES , I felt like the way the sentences or the words were patched up too much, and the way the situations were described were kinda over the top, and I can’t really describe it, but it’s kinda clichéd at some parts and predictable at the other.

Lastly, as the first book of the 5-book series, this one started okay and is on the right path. I’m hoping the next one will have more, more, more Lou, oh! I mean, more actions & stuff. :)

By the way, thank YOu to Veronica Mist, the author, who gave me a free copy of the book! :)
