Author Interview: Veronica Mist

Getting to know you..
Veronica Mist is a pure blooded Filipino. She’s a day dreamer, a storyteller, an artist, an adventure seeker... or, as her friends and family fondly calls her - a psycho. Because of that fatuous character, she came about the story of The Seven, where all her fantasy of nonsensical being and world came about. The Seven the Key of Credence is her first novel. She lives in Philippines with her parents and siblings.

Hi Veronica! Welcome to Coffee, Books and Me! Thanks for coming over and doing an interview! :)

Let’s start with...in one or two sentences, can you tell us about your book “The Seven: Key of Credence”?
The Seven – The Key of Credence is the first of the five books. This first book mostly focuses on Ryan, the main protagonist of the story.
This is your first book right? So, what inspired you to write this (first book)?
This is my first book alright, but it doesn’t mean this is my first story. :D
Inspiration? Hmmmm… I think this book mostly came from my childhood fantasies together with my friends. I’ve been thinking since I was in High School to write a story about the seven of us (Yes, we’re seven!), I write a few chapters before and let my friends read it but it just stop there seeing… well, I never even think of becoming a published writer. It’s just a quirk of being a teenager at that time where the most thing you could do was to watch anime with magical powers and dream of living in their world.
Is there an amount of time you set aside to write each day or a word count goal? How do you measure if your day was a successful writing day?
(Big smile) This question had been raise a couple of times now, and I honestly don’t know if I should answer it seeing as my way of writing is not very inspirational at all.
No, I don’t have a goal, I don’t even do a list on what should happen on each specific chapters. I write when I wanted, where I wanted. There were days that I retard from writing; likewise there were also a time when nothing could stop my fingers from flying into the keyboards when I’m very inspired.
I don’t want to be force when it comes to doing this or be given a specific work to be done for a day, because at the end, it would be a disaster. Sometimes, I force myself to atleast update my story when I know I’m already behind my schedule, but then I would just stare for a good three hours in front of my computer and no written words would appear on my blank document, until I fall asleep while watching the cursor blinks. I think that’s the reason it is called ‘creative writing’, when your creativity or your ‘muse’ is gone, you could not do anything about it, until it returns.
The time span I wrote this book was around five weeks. Including my lag time, when I’m too Iazy I completely ignore my ‘responsible’ side.
What did it feel like to finish your first novel and to see it printed?
Elated! I’m so used seeing my work posted on the net, but not in a printed form. I wanted to dance a victory dance (anime style) when I saw it.
Do you also love to read novels? In the average, how long can you finish one? :)
Yes, I love reading novels. When the plot is catchy and unique I could finish any book in one sitting, a day would already be lengthy if the book is really into my liking. The longest would be… well, forever. Because when I get bored with a book, there’s no way I would pick it up again.
Any particular genre that has drawn you to it?
Supernatural and paranormal. I love Dean Koontz and Stephen King’s work. But I read anything, I fell in love with Mario Puzo’s The Godfather as well, John Grisham’s The Firm, and most of Jude Deveraux historical romance work.
Do you read while writing or steer clear until you are in between novels? Many authors fear undue influence, do you have these fears or certain authors you would love to be able to write in the same style as?
Yeah, I heard about that as well and I really don’t understand why. I mean if you have a strong grasp of your plot, there’s no way you would be influenced by anything. Sometimes I read to be inspired, but I never….well… I mean as far as I know I never been influenced into changing my story because of what I read. Maybe because before I started writing my story, the whole of it is already done inside my head, the reason I don’t fear of being influenced by any other stories I read.
A writer should always admit to him or herself that everyone has their own writing style, and that there’s always much better than them.
If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world.. which would it be?
I wanted to live at Sanctae Mundus, the human world. People first must understand that even though the story had been written on a setting that is out of the Philippines, they should know that I never been out of the country as well. I never experienced autumn, the beauty and color of it, nor the cold kiss of wintery wind that accompanies that season. I wanted to experience Sanctae Mundus tranquility and get to know the people that reside on that quaint town,
Any favorite or memorable character from your book which you’ve felt yourself connected to?
I always love the Button people. They would always be my favorite. They are innocent beings that exist because they need to protect Intero Regnum. They know that they live to be a sacrifice, yet they never once complained of being born as such. They even serve those beings that in fact should be serving them because of their worth. The Button people symbolized Someone, and that Someone died on the cross and redeem the human soul from the slavery of Hell.
Okay, in your wildest dreams, which author would you love to co-author a book with? This could be anyone. :)
Uhm, well… that would be J.K. Rowling! Hahaha,,,
Veronica, do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers and future readers? Any future projects  (such as the sequel, etc)?
Again, The Seven is a five book series. People might find the first book hastily done, but no… the story is just unfolding. I would like to apologized if they think it’s written on a rush manner but I assure you it’s not. I just don’t like to put unnecessary part or scene just to lengthen it, I write what is needed and that is how it should be.
The Seven – The Key of Sanguine (book 2) will be release on July 2012, It would be my third book, since my second book entitled Spells (Life) will be coming out on March 2012.
Spell is a twin book, Spell (Life) and Spell (Death). It’s a magical romance about Jenhie Quinn, who had been taken by the School of Spells because of her unusual gift to spell even though her bloodline had never been a Spellers before. Spellers belongs to the most powerful and respected people in the world and was only born through distinctive genes. Jenhie is a paradox seeing as she was born out of normal parents, thus the council of the Spellers decided to shelter her away from the common people – or so they said.
Inside, she’ll meet Vincent… two years her senior. Vincent is the youngest Master of the twelve house of the School. It was an accident meeting at first, but when Jenhie grew older she then realized that never once she had been put to contend with any other houses when the annual Huntsman Game took place. She later then put it aside thinking as she never been close to having a powerful offensive spell to put down anyone.
But as the story progresses… many things will unfold and Jenhie will soon find out that she’s not really what she thought she was before.
Thanks for your time Veronica! We will surely see you around the book industry:)

THE SEVEN in a FLASH!

First of five books. The Key of Credence tells us about Ryan and her friends and how their simple curiosity brought forth a multitude of problems to them. This book lets the readers experience an entirely new and different world—one that involves the Heavens and the Helles, and most of all—it shows how the humans themselves and how the innate goodness of their souls can create a huge difference on just about everything.
