Lucy Whitley cannot wait to get out of Palm Desert. It’s not a place for a frizzy-haired science nerd, particularly when her fashion-obsessed older sister Sloane is the head of a clique of pretty girls who rule the school—and practically the whole town.Fortunately, life is about to change forever. Lucy’s dad is getting re-married, and then she can transfer to a boarding school in Connecticut, escaping all the mean girls and the endless whispers about the Whitley family scandal. Everything is going to be perfect—as long as the wedding goes smoothly.
My Review:
Who would’ve thought that the title “Dirt” is such a funny and cunning novel? Even the synopsis above doesn’t give off a happy/jolly vibe. But it actually is very entertaining to read.
At first, I wasn’t much of a fan of Lucy. I found her to be kind of selfish, despite of her some reasonable reasons of wanting to go away from her hometown known as the “Desert”. Her family is not an uncommon one, as there are many families in the world who are a bit detached from each other. They are indifferent to each other but it’s funny because they still acknowledge the existence of the other and they do actually know a lot about their sisters. Lucy is the geeky, adorkable kind of gal. She’s pretty but she doesn’t know how to fix herself. Sloane is the mean cheerleader type, the kind who not just rules their school, but the whole teenage society of their town. And Frankie is their youngest sister who loves playing xbox and playstation and other life-risking games. With those descriptions, you would probably say they’re just a bunch of different cluster of sisters, but the thing is their family is kind of famous. The kind who are followed by the press. Plus their mom left when they were still kids, bringing with her their second eldest sister. And now, their dad is getting remarried, and Lucy just wants it to be over so she can finally go to boarding school and leave everything behind. But, of course, not everything goes according to plan. I mean, where’s the fun if it does, right?
In this entertaining read, we can also learn that a family can still be revived and saved, even if your family has full of ‘dirt’ or you know, secrets and such. I love how Lori Culwell delivered the lines, and the story line was good too.
