Evie O'Neill has been exiled from her boring old hometown and shipped off to the bustling streets of New York City--and she is pos-i-toot-ly thrilled. New York is the city of speakeasies, shopping, and movie palaces! Soon enough, Evie is running with glamorous Ziegfield girls and rakish pickpockets. The only catch is Evie has to live with her Uncle Will, curator of The Museum of American Folklore, Superstition, and the Occult--also known as "The Museum of the Creepy Crawlies."
When a rash of occult-based murders comes to light, Evie and her uncle are right in the thick of the investigation. And through it all, Evie has a secret: a mysterious power that could help catch the killer--if he doesn't catch her first.
My Thoughts:

I finally finished the novel! I am so happy I read through the creepy and scary parts. And now I'm ready to give my verdict for it...and I have a lot to say.

Libba Bray is a talented writer. The Diviners is a good story. I loved the setting: roaring '20s, and New York! My favorite place in the world! Plus there's just something about flappers that makes me want to dance and be one of those Zegfield girls, lol. Not to mention the creeptastic factor level of the novel is so high I always needed to pause. I finished the book in about 10 days? Not because the writing was bad nor the story was rotten, but the novel was plenty scary and it make some really uncomfortable. I hated the villain, really. And I might have some problem with the omniscient POV. It was actually nice but it kept the suspense of finding out who the killer is, because we know the killer from the beginning. Though Bray was still able to keep the mystery going on, I don't know how but she did. And, I really don't like the idea of the Diviners being a series, I hoped it was only a standalone. There was also too much stuffs happening at the same time, too many POVs to read from, too many MCs. I did not mind reading each character's past, but come on even I had to admit there was too much! And spoiler alert! Like, Memphis, he had no purpose in the first book, also Theta and Henry, even Mabel! I hoped the Diviners was just written from Evie's point, with the occasional POv from the murder scenes, and the book would be shorter and it would still be great (and much appreciated by me). Also, I'm a fan of love stories, and I absolutely hated the slow romance! It was eating me up! But I honestly appreciated it when it arrived. I'm weird like that.

Okay, I'll end my mini rant now. I liked the story, all the technicalities were good but I
don't think it's for me. I hate reading "too much going on at the same time" stories, not to mention long ones. But if you're into murder/suspense/thrillers with a slow building romance and a great plot, then this one's for you. :)

  1. I've been seeing this one around a lot and heard really good things about it...but I don't really do historical fiction well. You saying it was really creepy makes me want to give it a try anyway - I love scary stuff!
Anyway, it's a shame things brought it down for you...I hope I'm not overwhelmed by all of the characters if I do read it.

On another note...I love your blog, it's so cute!! I stumbled on it today for the first time and I'm now following. I wanted to look at your past book reviews but when I clicked on 'reviews' on your navbar it said 'page not found.' :(
I've been having problems with the new blogger doing that to my blog as well, because it's changing my page URLs every time I update. I keep having to fix it, it's so annoying!

    *waves* Nice to meet you!
Sorry that was so long >.>
