Thoughts on Tuesdays is a meme here on my blog that I thought of making. I’ll post anything under the sun. So please bear with my craziness and randomness here. :) :) :) Thank you!
Endlessly increasing Never decreasing TBR File
Is it just me or is my to-be-read (TBR) file keeps on growing and growing? I know this is not a strange topic in the world of book blogging and avid readers all over the world, but I just can’t stop thinking about it these past few days.
Before, I thought it was only me who was acting like this. But as the days go by that I became engrossed with my blogging and reading other book blogs, I found others like me. I guess this syndrome (yes, I’ll call it that) is not unique to me. lol.
Now, where exactly am I going to with here? I found a meme months ago with the TBR intervention thing, and I wanted to join, but for some reasons I just can’t commit. For a while I went on and on buying books I liked (and have read good reviews online), so the pile kept growing and growing. THEN, after a while I realized I needed to STOP this MADNESS. LOL.
In the end, I swore to myself NOT to buy any more books until I finish all the books I bought that I still haven’t read. That’s about 9 books. Then, there’s the OTHER problem of reading slowly these past few days. For the last week, I only read ONE book. Can you believe that? I don’t know what’s gotten into me! I need to have my old reading nerdness back! :) I guess priorities got into me.
So I wish myself luck! And I hope you’ll support me guys on this quest to finish the 9 books! And to be back to my old “reading 3-5 books/week despite the busy life”.

9? That's it? :P I have the same problem, and it's getting worse and worse as the months go by. Right now I have over 100 unread books sitting on my physical shelves. What?? Madness! I tried to institute a self-inflicted book-buying ban for April. Didn't work. But this month I'm going to try again. No book buying until AFTER BEA. That should be easy. Should be...
ReplyDeleteI have the perfect solution for an ever-growing reading pile. Simply cap the number at a certain amount... my limit is 200. Then never allow yourself to get over that number.
ReplyDeleteYou can do this by removing old books from your pile (swap, giveaways, donations) every time a new book is added.
I feel the same way. Goodluck on your self imposed challenge!!
ReplyDelete9 because it was already decreased. Nyway! Thank u so much for your replies! As on my tbr list, i limit it up to 150, hHaha.
ReplyDeleteI once got my TBR pile down to about 88 books, but then I noticed that my library has a section that shows all of the books we've gotten in during the past month, and it was all downhill from there. Sometimes I forget to read from my TBR pile and just think "OO! That looks good!"
ReplyDeleteIt's like my old yarn stash. I'd just keep adding to it and forget I had yarn waiting to be read.
This is such a horrible problem of mine as well! I don't think I could convince myself to stop buying books until I finish what I have. That would drive me insane! LOL
ReplyDeleteGreat post!!!

If one purchases a lot of books, joining a book club may be a good choice. Clubs offer deals if you purchase a couple of selections at time, such as choosing a free third book. These offers improve as one buys more books.
ReplyDeleteHi Jenna! I can't help but think that maybe reading your TBR pile has become a chore. Reading should be fun and you should want to read everything you eventually get around to reading.
ReplyDeleteI have made myself not add anything to the TBR pile unless it absolutely calls to me. I figure the others that look kind of good will come around again, maybe when I have more time? But when you read so much that all the stories tend to blur into incoherent masses, there is a problem.
For me, part of the enjoyment of reading comes with digesting a story before I move on to the next, and if I put pressure on myself to get a certain amount of books read within a specific timeframe, I never seem to enjoy the book as much as I would have if it was simply for pleasure.
As it turns out, for me atleast, the same goes with writing. If it isn't fun, then what is the point?
Good luck getting caught back up! Great post!
Good luck with reading your nine books! My TBR list at Goodreads is currently at 450 books! It may take me a few years to get through THAT!
ReplyDeleteAnd even though it's so high, I STILL add more to it! Not to mention all the free books I "buy" on Amazon and the books that I have pre-ordered for my Kindle and...yeah, I totally understand where you're coming from. This disease has no cure, I'm afraid.
At least not for me.
Christie! i thought about that too, about reading like it’s a chore. it wasn’t for me before. Then I think it started when authors started asking me to review their books. since I was new, I tend to agree. Then later on I figured out that I have the right to disagree to their offers, and I should read books that I want to read, and I shouldn’t be pressured into it. Thanks so much for your insight! :)
ReplyDeleteSure, Jenna!
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right to only take books that you are really interested in. If you remember one thing, you will be much happier:
People will take what you will give them. You have to set the boundaries. No one else will do it for you.
I'm so glad you are comfortable saying no now. That is the first step. You can literally drive yourself crazy if you say yes to everyone.
Hugs.
