The Faerie Ring is an excellent combination of paranormal romance and historical fiction. I have always been a fan of historical fiction, especially when the setting’s in London. Reading the novel made me feel like I jumped back in time, complete with the smell of the place, the hustle and bustle of the people, the sounds of the train chumming away...okay, I’m feeling nostalgic here, of a place I’ve never even been! The setting was just perfect for the idea of faeries existing. (come to think of it, I’ve always wondered why London or England is the place of setting in books where faeries exists, anyway)
Kiki Hamilton has created relatable characters despite the time-gap we have with them. It’s easy to fall in love with Tiki, Rieker, Leo and the others. Tiki’s story has some kinda “Robin Hood” tinge with it, stealing (here, picking pockets) to be able to feed her family of orphans. But there is more to it than that, the paranormal side of the story where faeries exist, in fact this is where the mystery begins. It all started when Tiki made a super life-changing decision of stealing the Queen’s ring, which turned out to be the thing that keeps the truce between humans and faeries intact, if it’s lost, then tragedy and all kinds of unmentionable things will start to happen just like the last time...so this is where many secrets and unknown things begin to unravel. As Tiki makes decisions that led one to another conflict, the story just got better and better as things became more complicated. She begins to know more about the hidden things, and quite shockingly her past as well. What makes me happy is that amidst all these tribulations and adversities, her "family" is always there with her supporting her every move. The story showed love in many kinds of level. It’s really amazing how Tiki became a mother figure for these orphans despite being an orphan herself, and I personally think it’s a good lesson in the story. Except that because of love, we really really are faced with tough choices and end up with rough decisions.
The romance that develops in the story is also another factor that kept me going on, hehe. Who doesn’t want a nice love story in every tragedy right? Let’s not be hypocrites, hehe. I also think a love triangle will bloom here, I just don’t know WHAT IT IS WITH ME AND LOVE TRIANGLES! It’s like I want to add love triangles in every book I read, and I just end up torturing myself because I always choose the wrong guy! ANYWAY, Rieker is such a handsome lad I won’t mind marrying, heehee.
OKAY, OVERALL, the story is really good, I tell you. As the story starts, there’s never a dull moment. The right amount of action (which I love), of romance (which I like), of tragedy (which I masochistically like hehe), of family and love and courage and and all those things! (haha). The twists that always keeps you guessing (and I guess right sometimes, yey for me!).
The secrets, the tragedy, the mystery, the doubts that will creep into your mind while you’re in the story and the continuous and torturous feeling of always being watched (by the shadows, mind you) kept me up all night, as I just had to finish this wonderful and dark tale of Faeries intermingling with us, humans.
oooh, look a SHADOW! haha.
