[Book Review] Phoenix (Black City #2) by Elizabeth Richards

Hi guys! I’m just now posting my book review of Phoenix. This should have been with my blog tour post of the Phoenix blog tour a week before, but anyway, here goes. :)

Title: Phoenix
Series: Black City #2
Author: Elizabeth Richards
Publisher: Putnam Juvenile
Published on: June 4, 2013

Ash and Natalie are just starting to build a life together when things in the United Sentry States go from bad to worse. Ash and Natalie find themselves at the center of turmoil when dictator Purian Rose threatens Natalie’s life unless Ash votes in favor of Rose’s Law—a law that will send Darklings and other dissenters to a deadly concentration camp known as the Tenth.
When Ash can’t bring himself to trade Natalie’s life for those of millions of Darklings, her fate is sealed. Enter Elijah Theroux, the handsome Bastet boy Natalie once saved from her mother’s labs, where he’d been experimented on and tortured. It was his venom the Sentry used to create the lethal Golden Haze, the heart of the government conspiracy that led to Black City’s uprising and Ash’s rebirth as the Phoenix, the face of the rebellion. Elijah is back and Ash doesn’t like him; it’s clear he’s taken with Natalie, and Ash fears she may have feelings for him as well.
But Elijah also may have the answer to taking down Purian Rose for good—a powerful weapon called the Ora. Ash, Natalie and Elijah just have to escape Black City undetected to find it. But fleeing the city and finding this weapon (if it even exists) are easier said than done, and the quest could tear Ash and Natalie apart, even pushing them into the arms of others.
This enthralling sequel to Black City is just as absorbing, delicious and steamy as the first book, leaving readers hungry for the series conclusion

Excellent ending! It was a bit of a cliffhanger, but nothing that will cause you to book suicide. I love love love Phoenix (the book, not the character, but I also like him)! It's such a combination of rush, adrenaline, action, romance and more action. Ooh, not to mention lots of deaths! It was like lashing upon lashing of deaths. No mercy. So fast paced you won't even have time to mourn for one death after another. Too many new characters though, and I'm weak in memorizing names, but i don't linger much on these details. (Meaning: I read along even if it meant I didn't imagine the new characters well, I just focus on what they did lol).

There were some trouble in paradise happening between Ash and Natalie and I hated those times. Hated the martyr "plans" one of them had in order to save the other. I mean it was nice that they were self sacrificing but that person wasn't really thinking of the emotional trauma it will cause them. Anyway, I was glad they figured things out later. I loved how Elizabeth Richards did not prolong their breakup. Oops! Spoiler? Hehe.

The story plot did not feel like this second book is a filler in the trilogy. I didn't even feel that way even for one second. The novel was truly good, you can see it's going somewhere while still keeping the air of mystery..jeeping us readers on the edge of our seats. Great read!
